Varney Prepares for Next Step

Ty Varney thumb

The Ben Jackson Foundation is pleased to introduce Travel Award Recipient Ty Varney.

Varney is a 2017 graduate of Belleville High School and has been working towards a Criminal Justice degree from Madison Area Technical College.

He enrolled in college after graduation to pursue his degree, and is a member of the Belleville Fire Department. While taking these thoughtful steps on his journey to reach his career goals, he still felt the pull to enlist.  This pull lead him to enlist in the Marine Corps.

Varney will leave for basic training at Camp Pendleton on January 27, 2020.  After graduation he will be training for the Security Forces with a goal of becoming a member of the Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team (FAST).  Going to basic training will be the first time he has been away from home, family and friends.

He choose to enlist in the Marine Corps “because of the high standards that each Marine is held to.”  Working and speaking with former Marines has left an impression upon Varney.  He believes that becoming a Marine will help him face life’s challenges and excel as he has seen from other Marines.

As Varney embarks on this next step, he is excited to see the world.  When asked about what he is most excited about, he immediately responded “Becoming the person that I want to be and maturing as a person.”  Although he is excited to see the world outside of Belleville, he will miss hanging out with friends and family. The mental aspect of being away is what he anticipates to be difficult.

Varney was nominated for his Ben Jackson Foundation Travel Award by the Belleville Fire Department Captain, Brady Mcsherry and his training officer, Justin Mertes. Captain Mcsherry is a former Marine.

We thank you for your service, and good luck!
